Thursday July 28

Saying for the Day:Doing no good is doing evil enough!
------It rained again today in Pigeon Falls and people are beginning to wonder if they prayed a little too hard. Of course the farmers aren't unhappy, the rain means they can shut off the artificial watering systems and save a little money. The people who live for and off of the tourist trade are the one's that are unhappy. They need all the sunshine they can get. It has been a good year for tourists in Pigeon Falls even though the trains have been somewhat fouled up. Tourists like the old look of the town and the good citizens do little things to enhance that look.
The Kivisto Public Sauna, one of the last in Upper Michigan, is one of the attractions. A Sauna still costs only $5.00 and for that you get an authentic, old, Finnish Sauna. the Sauna has wood stoves, rocks to make steam, and water pails to throw water on the rocks. It is far better that those electric copies that pass off as Saunas in the rest of the world. Kivisto's Sauna has been there since the beginning of Pigeon Falls and is still operated by a family member. It is not the original Sauna as that burned down in 1931 when some fool overfilled the wood stove and fell asleep. What a Sauna he got. In any case the tourists love Jack's Sauna.
The Pigeon Days Committee was really busy today. They got a group of volunteers to sweep the yellow brick road which will feature in many of the activities of Pigeon Days. They also sent out letters with the cooperation of Last Lutheran Church which allowed them to use the computer and the printer, no charge. The letters went to people who might be interested in exhibiting in the Art On the Yellow Brick Road event. These were mostly people who have exhibited in the past but there were a few new possibilities. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
------Well I had a good night last night and I used no oxygen. Every time I woke up I monitored my Oxygen content and it stayed up all night. Contrary to some of my children's opinions I did not stop using oxygen because of this trip but because I am tired of hauling those tanks wherever I go over night. The last time I was in the hospital they told me I didn't really need the night oxygen but I was afraid to let go. Now I can go and just take my small emergency tank. In the morning I had to work between the rain drops. Bree and I put in the Yellow Brick Road. She has been such a help I hate to see her go home. I made transfers but we didn't get to use them. At the same time Betty was preparing for our trip. We went to the Museum and posted a sign inviting people to come and see the train run on Wednesdays. That means I only have next Tuesday to check out the trains I will be running and getting everything ready. When we came back it was raining hard. I came and updated the church's web page for August. I changed the look again. I made some pictures of the quilters for Bettsy Hill. Betty did laundry and washed Brees hair at least I think she did. Well I need a breathing treatment.

The New Bathtub Posted by Picasa

Wednesday July 27

Saying for the day:If opportunity doesn't knock, build a door.Milton Berle
.....Well people are still rejoicing over the return of the pigeons. You can't have Pigeon Days without pigeons anymore than you can have a Bass Festival without bass or a Fungus Fest without fungus. Vicki East, daughter of Esther Kivi and daughter-in-law of Buddy East has written a song that she is going to sing just before the Pigeon Days Parade, that's if the loud speaker system works. The song is entitled "Pigeons Return" and goes as follows:
When the Pigeons return to Pigeon falls- coo coo coo
And we hear them cooing in the wood-coo coo coo
Then the trains will run on time-coo coo coo
Things will be the way they should-coo coo coo
When the Pigeons return to Pigeon Falls-coo coo coo
And we hear them cooing in the wood-coo coo coo
People will be singing in the streets-coo coo coo
And all the crops will grow so good- coo coo coo
When the pigeons return to Pigeon Falls- coo coo coo
Then love again will fill the land- coo coo coo
With pigeons cooing in the wood- coo coo coo
We will all walk hand in hand.- coo coo coo
This is sung to the tune of almost anything if you push it a little. Well it won't hit number one on the hit parade but I guarantee it will be a hit at the Pigeon Days parade. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls
........I had a good night last night, slept without oxygen for the first time in a long time. Had a bath in the new tub with the whirlpool before I went to bed and that was very relaxing. I played around with the new printer and made Betty some 4x6's of Bree and one of me in the new tub but its not x-rated. Then I went and began to put together the figures we will use for the Pigeon Day Parade on the Garden Railroad. We went to Iron River and ate at Mr.T's. Then we went to Synder's to get a prescription filled. We got a new soap dish from Pamadia, a hat for Bree at the dollar store and came home. Betty and Bree went to the beach and I stayed home and painted rocks to look like a mountain. Then I continued searching for short term furnished housing in Green Bay. Bree is such a joy and has such an imagination she helped write the Pigeon Falls song. She added the Coo Coo Coos and helped with the rest of it. Well Betty and Bree are back and they had a good time at the beach. They did a lot of swimming. We discussed the coming trip and felt that it would be best if Peter took his van. Pennie really does need to rest that foot, and I really do need a breathing treatment.

The Pigeon Days Banner and Pigeon statue Posted by Picasa

Tuesday July 26

Saying for the Day:Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.- Robert A. Heinlein
......The pigeons came back to Pigeon Falls today. Nobody knows why they came back or for that matter why they left after the big storm. Whatever the reason there they were this morning sitting on the Town Hall roof and cooing as if they had never left. People are so happy they even forgave them for what they did to the Pigeon Statue, while hoping that it was not a comment on the statue itself. Pigeon Days would just not be Pigeon Days without pigeons.
Mrs. Wilson Mcmorison III hit the curb coming into Pigeon Falls again today. I don't think she ever misses it. She usually parks up on the sidewalk as well. Because she is so rich nobody wants to tell her how to drive. Some brave person suggested to her that she get a chauffeur. She said, " She has always done her own driving and always will". She has no relatives to talk to her unless you count Fred Bubster, who may or may not be a relative. Mayor South has even suggested she be banned from driving in town while we still have curbs and sidewalks but she was only kidding.
Well the big announcement came today on who RM is. Mayor South went to the bandstand at 12:00 to give a "short speech which will include the celebrity who will lead the Pigeon Days Parade". Well at 12:30 she hadn't gotten to the celebrity yet. She had, however, thanked everyone who had anything to do with Pigeon Days. She thanked banner hangers, planners, workers, committees, and even the pigeons for coming back. It was like watching the Academy awards where they go through all the Oscars you don't care about before they finally come to the one you want. At around 12:30 she made the announcement that everyone was waiting for. The celerity who would lead this years parade was Ronald McDonald. He was even bringing two clown friends and McDonald's was sending a special railroad car with him. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
..... Very good night last night. I slept till 6:30 this morning. In the morning we went to Iron Mountain to shop. we had breakfast at the Great Northern Buffet. The food was great and it was a joy to watch Bree eat. Then we went to the dollar store . Bree got a surprise package for Luke.
We bought a truck and a tractor that were the right size for the garden railroad. Then we went to Wal-Mart >We got paint we needed, some dollhouse furniture for Bree, some dog candy for Peter's dog, some craft supplies for the garden railroad and a photo printer for Betty. Its kind of an early Christmas gift. It has its own little screen and doesn't need my computer. Betty can put the card from her camera into the printer and print out the pictures she wants. We bought a package of 50 4x6 sheets so she can have plenty of pictures. Both Betty's sister and my sister called today to give us information on the trip to Greater America. Our bathroom is done except for the painting and I get to take a bath tonight, boy do I need it. In addition to the new bathtub we have a new toilet which is higher than the old one making it easier for me to use. We also have a new sink. Well I am going to take a bath right after my breathing treatment.

The Pigeon Days Banner Posted by Picasa

Monday July 25

Saying for the Day:The world is full of willing people, some willing to work, the rest willing to let them.Robert Frost
.
...Well they hung the Pigeon Falls Pigeon days banner over the main street today. Toivo's oldest son , Robert, volunteered to do the job. He fell twice but didn't break anything. Toivo held the ladder and did a pretty good job. When he finished somebody said they were afraid the light pole would bend over from the weight of the banner so they cabled the pole to the roof of the Post Office. In ten years of hanging that banner the pole has never bent but better safe than sorry. Robert is a student at the University in Marquette but he is not studying banner hanging. He intends to be a teacher. The banner looks really good those Lutheran ladies did a fine job of repairing it.
Tomorrow Mayor South will announce who the mystery person is who is coming to lead the Pigeon Day Parade and whose initials are RM. With that out of the way people can go back to speculating about the Bubster person. The good citizens have to have something to talk about.
The Pigeon Days Committee is now working on the other details of Pigeon Days. There will be the usual yellow brick road race. Run on the yellow brick road , of course. The only time they won't be running on bricks is when they do the turn around in the Jupola field. They are adding a watermelon eating contest which could be interesting, They are picking people to judge the parade. They also have to set up some mechanism to pick the Pigeon Queen. They have scheduled the Pigeon Dance for the basement of Last Lutheran Church after they promised Pastor Marvel there would be no alcoholic beverages at the dance. I remember when Lutherans wouldn't allow dancing in the Church, period. Well I'll keep you informed as to what 's happening in Pigeon Falls.
........ Had a good night last night and didn't get up till 6:30 this morning. The plumbers came and promised that everything would be done by tomorrow except the painting. In the morning we put rocks on the mountain. With Bree helping we quickly used up all the rocks Dawn and Paul left. After we finished with that Betty filled the cracks with foam. I worked on getting the lights ready to install on the main street. Then Bree and Betty installed them and hung the Pigeon Days banner. In the afternoon Bree took all the pop cans back and made $11.00 . then she and Betty went to the lake. I tried to run a train but the heat was unbearable so I gave up and worked on the computer. At supper time I got called by the university of Michigan for a health survey that took about 29 minutes. The call came right in the middle of my watermelon. We did a follow up on the one place in green Bay that looked promising and found out it was fifteen miles out of Green Bay in the snow belt. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Sunday July 24

Saying for the day:Romans 8:28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.
......Well Last Lutheran Church was full this morning and Pastor Marvel who knows a good thing when he sees one, preached on the rain. He said that "Just as the rain God sent caused our flowers to bloom so the Holy Spirit that God sends causes our dried up withered souls to bloom. The God who answered our prayer for rain will also answer our prayers for renewal" It was one of his better sermons and it was talked about in a lot of Pigeon Falls homes this afternoon.
Peter Linna made a quick trip to Pigeon Falls to see Eino and brought his daughter Bree along. She was talking to Mayor South when the Mayor asked if she had guessed who the celebrity was that was going to lead the Pigeon Days parade and whose initials were RM . She took one guess and from the look on Mayor South's face she hit the nail right on the head. The Mayor asked her not to tell anybody until after the official announcement. Bree is going from Pigeon Falls to stay for a week with her grandparents and she said she wouldn't even tell them. Her father tried to get the information from her on the way to her grandmother's but she refused to tell. That girl is pretty good at keeping secrets. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
..........Good night last night, back on the big mask. We were awaken at 3:00 by heavy thunder but that only last fifteen minutes or so. This morning I brought the church web page up to date with new staff pictures. Then I went back to using the internet to look for possible apartment for January and February in Green Bay. After that Betty and I worked on the street lights for Pigeon Falls and she started painting a new house. Before we could finish either my son Peter and his family came and we talked for most of the afternoon. Luke didn't talk he spent his time playing cowboy and shooting up the place. Bree is staying with us for the week. We took them all out to eat at Fob's. Before they left Peter helped his mother put Wink's Woods back in its space on the layout. When they left Bree and I and Betty finished the street lights. Tomorrow we will put them in place and hang the Pigeon Days banner. If we want to finish this part of the layout by August we have a lot of work to do this week but Bree is here to help us so we might make it.
Well I need a breathing treatment.

Saturday July 23

Saying for the day:Not what we have But what we enjoy, constitutes our abundance. John Petit
...... It rained in Pigeon Falls today, a real soaker, and everyone is overjoyed. It has been dry for so long that yards were drying up and people's beautiful flower gardens were dying. The Town Council had put a ban on all watering and asked people to go easy on other water use like baths. Its bad enough that we won't be able to smell the flowers but if the good citizens don't take baths what we will be smelling won't be pretty. During the ban some of the people had gone out to their cottage on a lake and brought back a barrel or two of lake water to use for their gardens. People here are resourceful. But now all that may be over as the rain continues. One suspects there may be more people than usual in Pigeon Falls churches tomorrow as they give thanks for prayers answered.
Some of Pigeon Falls good citizens took the excursion train to the big city of Iron Mountain. Along with shopping that got to eat at the Great Northern Buffet. When they returned Tom South, the Mayor's husband wondered why we couldn't have something like that in Pigeon Falls. The South's are relatively new to the area and didn't know that fifteen years or so ago someone did try a buffet style restaurant with all you could eat for one price. Well those farmers went in at noon and didn't quit eating till six. The restaurant only lasted a couple of months before they gave up and closed down. Hard work makes for a tremendous appetite. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
...... Bad night last night. Tried a new mask and it will be back to the big one tonight. In the morning, after the breathing treatment we created a stick on membership card for my engineers hat. It shows I am a member of Large Scale Online. Then we worked at putting up rocks. well Betty put up rocks and I painted some that were already there after moving the track out of the way. In the afternoon it started to rain so Betty went back to painting the house for the Railway. First she took the furniture out of it to give to Bree. I worked on the street lamps but Betty didn't like the design so I started over . Two designs later she was happy. In the meantime I stabbed myself with a screwdriver while using it to pry a piece of wood loose. Never use tools for other than their intended purpose. Betty and I went to the Saturday night service and Pastor Eric Ackerman preached. He also lead the singing with his guitar. It was a great service and I felt refreshed when I came out. Then we went grocery shopping. Shopping does not refresh me but it needs to be done. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Friday July 22

Saying for the Day: We are all here for a spell. Get all the good laughs you can.:Will Rogers
.....Well this Bubster person is still the main topic being discussed in Pigeon falls today. Everyone is searching their memory and trying to find some connection to a Bubster. At this point there has been no success. The way the story is moving one almost expects that half the town will be out to meet the train when he comes. Tommy, the undertakers son, said he wants to ask him if he is a good Bubster or a bad Bubster. He just got through watching a DVD of the Wizard of Oz. Well it will be a couple of weeks before we know more but that won't keep people from talking and guessing. Sharing ignorance is not something that only national TV news people do, it began in small towns like Pigeon Falls. Mo, Morningsunrises Material, is still in Pigeon Falls. She says she is staying until she can approve the high tunnel at Crippled Creek and the trestle. Her failure to give her approval thus far has caused a good number of problems for the railroad and the town. She is very stubborn but people tend to like her. Today she made pasties with the Methodist ladies. They said she is one great pasty maker and very fast too. The story in town is she is a sister to Dr. Fortress who is the President of the M&CL railroad and she has him so upset he's not talking to her. If he is her brother she sure isn't playing favorites .
They are hauling out the big ladder and getting ready to hang the Pigeon Days banner. Pigeon Falls doesn't have one of those fancy lift vehicles so they have to depend on a high ladder. It takes two men to put the banner up, one to climb the ladder and tie the banner in place and the other to hold the ladder steady. Last year a big wind came up just as the second side of the banner was being fixed in place .It caught the banner straight on and the ladder and the man were pulled out into the street. The fellow holding the ladder held on and slowly leaned it back against the roof but is scared them both so bad that they had to find somebody else to put it up this year. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
......Had a good night last night used the big mask. I tried the small one and it fell apart. This morning Betty and I created the banner for Pigeon falls. I made the transfers on the computer and she pressed them on the cloth. We also put transfers on a sweater with our web site and blog site to wear to the National Garden Railroad Convention in Chicago. Then we finished the cabinet that was left in the living room and moved it to the kitchen. Betty went to the Credit Union and transferred money from savings to checking so we could pay for the new bathtub. we were very disappointed because the plumber didn't show up this morning so we are still without a working bathtub. In the afternoon Betty went back to painting the house for the railroad and I finished the yellow brick road. I started a set of street lamps to tie the banner to. Then Betty went off to her Birthday Club for supper. I worked on enlarging my Large Scale on Line Badge so we could put it on a transfer and attach it to my hat. Sue called and they are coming North the first week in August. We hope to get together with them sometime that week. I spent some time working on a little mystery of my own with no luck. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Thursday July 21

Saying for the day: * Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
......Mrs. Wilson Mcmorison III was really upset today. She got a letter from Fred Bubster claiming that he was a relative and was coming to visit her. She said that she had never heard of him and there were certainly no Bubsters in her family. In fact all the family is dead as far as she knows, she is the only surviving member. So , right away, she assumed that this Bubster was after her money. She took the letter to Pastor Marvel were she swore up and down that there had never been a Bubster in the family. No Bubster yesterday she said, no Bubster today, and there won't be one tomorrow. Pastor Marvel counseled her to take it easy as just maybe there was a family member she was not aware of. Perhaps a niece had married or a cousin and they married a Bubster. But Letti, not taking it easy, repeated that if anyone had married somebody with a name like Bubster she would have heard about it. Nothing Pastor Marvel said seemed to help so he offered to pray with her and that calmed her down a bit. After the prayer she went back home to wait the coming of the Bubster. But that won't be for a couple of weeks until then she and half the people of the town will have to speculate on who this Fred Bubster is.
Even Eino who seems to know everybody had no knowledge of any Bubsters.
Speaking of Pastor Marvel, Tommy, the undertaker's son, found an old comic book in which a young boy says the magic word shazam and becomes Captain Marvel. So Tommy has taken to calling Pastor Marvel Captain Marvel and when he sees him he asks him to say Shazam. Pastor Marvel seems to enjoy the whole thing. Some in the congregation are waiting for him to show up in the pulpit with cape and Captain Marvel suit. Its the sort of thing he might do. Well I'll keep you informed.
.....Had a fairly good nights sleep but got up at 5:00 so we could get Betty to the hospital by 8:00. Of course when we got there everything was changed as usual and Betty was the third patient in instead of the first. We didn't get out of the hospital until 1:00. I did finish reading the latest Harry Potter book. Betty's test showed no polyps which is very good news. I drove home from the hospital and had to sign a paper that I was driving and not Betty before they would let her out. Coming home there was E-mail from Bob and Sue Johnson giving some aid in finding a place in Green Bay and we are checking out both ideas. There was also an E-mail from Christine asking how to make comments on this blog. I tried to find some way for her to do that. Then I went and worked on the yellow brick road which won't get done until tomorrow. Betty slept most of the afternoon. I went around from the garage and picked up the mail since I still have trouble with stairs. Betty usually gets the mail. The men will be back tomorrow to work on the bathtub which is taking forever. I did some searching on the computer for rental units in Green Bay checking out the website Bob and Sue sent. It does look like a possibility but Betty and I have to decide if we really want to do this before we contact the owner. Well I need a breathing treatment

Wednesday July 14

Saying for the day:Honest criticism is hard to take, particularly from a relative, a friend, an acquaintance, or a stranger- Franklin P. Jones
.......Another nice day in Pigeon Falls, with work continuing on, repairing Wink's Woods, and the old Timormen house. The road commission came and did its yearly evaluation of Pigeon Falls roads. They always find lots wrong but never provide any money to repair them. The only really good road that Pigeon Falls has is the yellow brick road built by Eino's grandfather, Bullfrog Jupola. Of course Bullfrog wasn't his real name , that was Eino same as his grandson. Eino has no idea how his grandfather came to be called Bullfrog but he is doing some research to try to find out. In any case everyone called him Bullfrog. He was a great horse trader and made a lot of money buying and selling things. That's how the brick road got built. Bullfrog got a load of bricks in trade for something or another and thought he had a great deal until the train showed up with the bricks and they turned out to be yellow. It seems Bullfrog couldn't talk anybody into building something with yellow bricks. So old Bullfrog sat down with the town council and offered to build a road out of town as far as the bricks would go. It would replace the dirt road where in the Spring and Fall the cars kept getting stuck in the mud. Bullfrog offered the road at cost to the town and the city fathers took the deal. Well Bullfrog didn't make any money on that deal but he didn't lose any either and he wasn't stuck with a load of bricks. He took his old friend Frank Baum out to show off his new road and Frank was really impressed. He wanted to know where the road went and Eino, who didn't want to say it just ended out in the woods where a dirt road continued, told him it went to the Green City. The next thing Bullfrog knew Frank had written a book and included the yellow brick road and the Emerald City. The next time he came to go fishing he gave Bullfrog a signed copy. Eino still has that book. When the movie came out the town council voted to put up a sign that said "This is the original yellow brick road". Bullfrog built well because aside from a few replacement bricks that road is as good as ever. Too bad Bullfrog isn't still alive so we could tell him we need another lane. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
......Very good night last night. Only woke up once before 5:30. In the morning Dawn and Paul came with another load of rocks and took us to breakfast at Fob's. Poor Betty could only drink because she is not allowed to eat anything until after her test tomorrow. I finished repairs to Wink's Woods in the morning. Betty went to Tops. The men are hard at work putting in our new bathtub and toilet. In the afternoon Betty went back to painting the little house and I began to build a yellow brick road out of little model bricks we found in the basement. Betty sprayed them with yellow paint. Coming in I searched on the internet for an apartment building in Green Bay that would rent for less that six months. We are thinking of going to Green Bay for January and February. Peter is looking for us as well. Betty is a little upset because the stuff she drank to get her ready for the exam tomorrow had red dye in it and she wasn't supposed to drink anything with red dye. She went out and bought another bottle with the same stuff but clear. She used this in place of the other bottle with the red dye in it. I am slowly entering things into my home inventory list which is called "Everything I Own 3" from a company called Mycroft. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Saying for the Day:One has fear in front of a goat, in back of a mule, and on every side of a fool--Edgar Watson Howe
........It was a beautiful day in Pigeon Falls today. The workers started repairing Winks, the first lumber train of this season came through, the old Timormen house is getting a new paint job, and the work on the Crippled Creek Tunnel is progressing rapidly. Yesterday we wondered how they were going to lower the trestle that was built , inadvertently, two feet too high. Well they solved the problem by elevating the track. They brought in a bulldozer and steam shovel and in the mile before the trestle they raised the track gradually until it was the same height as the trestle. I would say they were pretty smart but these are the same people who built the trestle two foot too high to begin with.
Mayor South who says she is getting tired of all the speculation as to who the celebrity will be gave out the first initial today. It is R. So our Celebrity has a first name that starts with R and a last name that starts with M. The town is really working on that now. Here are some of the names that have been suggested: Richard Marcus, Rob Marshall, Ricky Martin, Reba McEntire, and Robert Morse. I am sure that by tomorrow that list will be greatly enlarged. Eino was thinking of asking Lori Linna to ride in the lead car in the Pigeon Day parade , right behind RM. But her husband Pete said they had a previous engagement for that weekend and That Lori felt bad because she really liked the people of Pigeon Falls. This years parade is shaping up to be one of the best ever. Well I'll keep you informed of what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
...... Very hard night last night. I slept in very small amounts at a time and had trouble breathing. I was fine in the morning so it must have been the heat in the bedroom. In the morning the men came and started on installing our new bathtub. I went and worked at getting a train ready to run. Got the lumber train with three cars and an engine to go around five times without a disconnect or a derailment. Betty moved the pigeon statue to the middle of the street along with the band stand. She put Joanne's Beauty Shop in place and brought Wink's Woods in for repair, it really needs it. Then she painted one of the new houses , a two day job, while I removed the roof from the end of Wink's Woods and cut and painted a new one. In the afternoon I went to the Doctor's and got a clean bill of health . He won't see me again for three months. Then I went and had my knees X-rayed. We went to Iron River to the drug store . On the way home we tried to go around the road construction and got lost. We came out on the wrong side of Iron River. Coming home we had a mystery there was a wire basket, and some other things in the sink. Betty thought somebody had come in and gone through the cupboard, Then we realized that the workmen pounding in the bathroom had shaken them loose. Betty has now finished reading the latest Harry Potter book. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Monday July 18

Saying For the Day:If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?
......Lots of trouble in Pigeon Falls today. First the state inspector, a Mrs. Morningsunrise Material, warned that the tunnel walls in the upper train tunnel at Crippled Creek looked like they might cave in and she wouldn't allow any trains to run through it. Mo, as she prefers to be called, also noted that the new trestle when its finished would be two feet too high. Now how do you lower a trestle two feet? What this means is at least another week where the trains would have to come in through the lower tunnel and thus fewer trains could run. We are nearing the big tourist season and people are begging to worry. President Fortress doubled the work crew up at the tunnel and said they will get it shored up and safe. Mrs. Wilson Mcmorison III, Pigeon Falls richest widow,
showed up in town wearing her newest high fashion purchase. I tell you it looked like she was wearing a flour sack and it sort of smelled like one too. Everyone, however, commented on how beautiful she looked and praised the new outfit. You have to remember she is the richest woman in town. Everywhere she went there were owes and was and she was really feeling very proud. She was walking down main street when a little boy began to laugh and laugh. She asked him why he was laughing and he said "Lady your the first person I ever saw wearing a flour sack for a dress but I like the smell. Other people then realized how silly they had been and they began to laugh too. When she came back to town in the afternoon she was wearing a very different outfit. The whole thing reminds me of some child's story but I can't remember the name of it.
Still no progress in guessing who the celebrity will be for the Pigeon Days Parade. But the committee is now almost certain that they will get the person. The apartment on the end of Wink's Woods has one wall that is collapsing and so they had to call in some carpenters. Of course Winks Woods is no longer run or even owned by Wink, Reginal Winkowski, who moved away a long time ago. I'm afraid the new owners haven't taken good care of the non store part of the building. Well I'll keep you informed as to what is happening in Pigeon Falls.
........I slept poorly again last night , I think its the high humidity. This morning I finished the book I Was reading, Betty's reading the new Harry Potter book. I worked in the garage and then Betty and I worked on shoring up the middle mountain where the bottom support was threatening to tilt over. We also used up over half the rocks Dawn brought. I go to see the Dr. tomorrow. In the afternoon Betty worked at finishing repainting the water tower and finished the beauty shop. I set up the new vegetable stand. Then a young man and his mother came and we stopped and ran the train for them. It was fun and it worked most of the time. Betty had to run the track cleaner over one corner and we had the train tip over once. But it was still fun. I e-mailed the baptism pictures Betty took to the church office and put them on the church website. Now I need a breathing treatment.

Sunday July17

Saying for the day:Matthew 28:19 Therefore go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
.......For a little while today the good people of Pigeon Falls were afraid their big celebration would be canceled. It started raining at about noon and came down in buckets. Lori Linna who had come in on a special passenger car attached to the morning milk train got to see a lot of Wink's Woods Shopping Center while she waited for the rain to stop. She has become something of a celebrity and everyone wanted to talk to her so the time went by fast. At about 1:30 the rain suddenly stopped and the sun came out. By 2:00 it was beautiful and the celebration started on time. The rain had done everyone a real favor because it cooled everything down and it would be another couple of hours before the temperature went back up to 90. Pastor Marvel gave a very short opening prayer, and then Mayor South, who loves celebrations, got to speak. In answer to just about everyone's prayer she did not read the Pigeon story but encouraged everyone to read it themselves on the base of the statue. The Liar's Club 65 piece band, which has three members, then played two nostalgic numbers and the official pigeon song. O Pigeon, O Pigeon come and help us now". Then the Great and Exalted, High and Wonderful, Grand Pigeon read a poem entitled "God Made Pigeons". The program closed with another short prayer by Pastor Marvel who remembered to ask God's blessings on the pigeons. the things small town pastors end up doing could fill a book. After the program Lori Linna bought some pasties from the Methodist ladies to take home to Peter who hasn't had a good pasty since he left Pigeon Falls. She also promised to send Mayor South, by E-mail, copies of the pictures she took of the celebration. Mayor South can print them out and share them with the community. Everyone agreed that the new statue was even better than the one that was destroyed by the storm.
Well I'll keep you informed of what happening in Pigeon Falls.
Bumpy night last night , only slept two hours At a time. This morning Betty went to help at the Church, she had to serve coffee after a baptism. She soon came home to get our camera because the church camera had a dead battery. She ended up serving coffee and taking pictures. I moved the last two cabinets out to the garage. Built a stand for the deer chaser. Painted the substructure for the train layout, put away all the tools in the garage. Then I put together the cabinet to go in the kitchen except for the doors. Betty came home and we went to Iron Mountain. I drove for the first time in three years. I had to find out if I could drive on Thursday after Betty has her tests at the hospital. I can. We ate at the Ranch. Then we went to Wal-Mart. I got some sweaters and a pair of pants. We got some fabric to make the banner for the model railroad layout. We bought two houses, a fruit stand , and a tree house in the toy section. Compared to what we would pay for houses like them made for Garden Railroads they were a steel. We will have to repaint them and remove a few things but they will work perfectly. We also bought some doweling and little wooden knobs to make street lights. we finished shopping by buying some paint. On the way home I thought about the Bishop's sermon last night. Tom is such a good preacher and he knows the Good News as well as anybody can. When I got home I created transfers for the banners and for a shirt. Now I need a breathing treatment.

Saturday July 16

Saying for the day:Doesn't "expecting the unexpected" make the unexpected expected?
.......Peter Linna called Eino and asked if it would be possible to get his wife Lori there in time for the big celebration on Sunday. Eino called Dr. Fortress and Fortress still squirming because of yesterday's disconnect said he would add a passenger car to Sunday's milk run so she should get there in plenty of time. Eino tried to talk Peter into coming as well but Pete said his Dr. wants him to walk a lot so he can't spend that much time on the train. Everyone is excited as a new beauty shop is opening in town on Monday, its called Joanne's Beauty Shop. Her sign company made her sign to big for the front of the place so she had them put it on the roof. She is in the old school building but it is all repainted and looks very different. The town is happy because they haven't had a hairdresser since Elaine Stir retired, she operated out of her home and had no shop as such.
The Great and Exalted, High and Wonderful, Grand Pigeon is working on his usual float for the pigeon day parade. He has a big paper and plaster goldfinch , painted to look like a pigeon that he carries in the rumble seat of the old car he drags out of the barn for the parade. Buddy East, the real estate man has been Grand Pigeon for five years now. He heads up the Pigeonelle Lodge number 1. The Pigeonelle Lodge was the first group formed in Pigeon Falls and the first and only lodge to admit women as full members. Almost a quarter of Pigeon Falls belongs and it is great fun. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
......Great night last night didn't get up till 6:30 this morning. Dawn called at seven and showed up at the door at 8. They brought rocks and took us out to breakfast. Betty and I finished the transformation of the old school into a beauty shop, finished the pigeon statue, finished the bird for the Grand Pigeon, and got a good start on the last track underlayment. Dawn keeps telling us our tunnel is leaning but I think it will hold up. In the afternoon we started on a stand for the deer alarm but we'll have to finish that tomorrow. The new Harry Potter book came it is huge. Betty and I went to the celebration of our Pastor's 25 year of ordination. It was a very Good service and the Bishop had a great sermon. At the dinner, afterward he surprised me with a retirement certificate .He said I should take it even though it was signed by two bishops. Coming home I processed the pictures I took of the service and dinner, upgraded the church's web page to include them and sent copies by E-mail to the church office. Now I have to go and take a breathing treatment.

Friday July 15

Saying for the day:We must believe in luck. For how else can we explain the success of those we don't like?
........What a day in Pigeon Falls. The M&CL railroad got enough tourists to run their version of Thomas the Tank Engine from Rusty Creek to Pigeon Falls. That would have been a good thing but the trestle still isn't fixed and so the train had to come by way of the Crippled Creek Tunnel. Just before the tunnel the passenger cars disconnected and the engineer went merrily on without them. I guess his motto is "Never Look Back!". In any case when he stopped at Zach's Cabin in the woods where old man Stevenhill , dressed up in a woodsy outfit, sells a trinket or two , he discovered he had no passengers. He had to back up all the way to the Crippled Creek Tunnel. Those were some very unhappy tourists, I'll tell you. To make matters worth for M&CL one of the passengers was a tour director who was thinking of offering the Thomas the Tank rides as one of his packages. I guess M&CL can forget about that now. Dr. John Fortress, President of M&CL apologized personally to each passenger in an attempt to control the damage. This railroad becomes more like an airline every day.
The big pigeon statue is done. Every last word of the Pigeon Story is on the base but you have to go all the way around to read it. The town is planning a big celebration on Sunday in front of the bandstand . The Liar's Club 65 piece band will play and the statue will be dedicated by Mayor South. After much debate it was decided to ask Pastor Marvel to open the celebration with prayer and take their chances with the ACLU. The ladies from the Methodist Church will be selling pasties after the celebration but that doesn't violate any law. Everyone is hoping Mayor South won't read the entire Pigeon Story again. Well I'll keep you informed.
.......Very good night last night. Got going early this morning because we had a visitor coming to see the trains. So I had to do some wiring and test the trains I would run. well Thomas the Tank had the passenger cars disconnect at the tunnel. So we had to pull the cars. The mill wheel wouldn't turn so we had to pull the mill wheel. We finished the pigeon statue. The pigeon story is around the base in 5 point type but it can be read. The little boy and his mother came and I did the best I could but of course we had some sudden unexplained stops. The boy loved it in any case and his mother was very happy. After she left we started on the next wooden frame that will lead up to the trestle. We'll finish that tomorrow. Then Betty worked on our new beauty shop which used to be the old school. Its coming along very nicely. After all that we went grocery shopping $156 worth of groceries, and we don't eat like kings. But we do eat a lot of fruit. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Thursday July 14

Saying for the Day:Yesterday's the past and tomorrow's the future. Today is a gift - which is why they call it the present.Bill Keane:
........The gray paint came, faster than expected considering the problems with the trains, and it was a day to work on the statue in Pigeon Falls. Three of the workers from the Slowvinsky Lumber and Hardware Company came up to Eino's garage to do the work. Of course the Slowvinsky Lumber and Hardware Company is not owned or run by the Slowvinsky's anymore. the last of the Slowvinsky's retired on 1996 and sold out his share in the company. The rumor in town is that it is now mostly owned by the M&LC railroad but nobody seems to know for sure. One thing you can be fairly sure of because this is a small town it will be Slowvinsky's forever and we will never see the M&CL Lumber and Hardware Company as the name. But none of that is important the three workers started in building a base for the statue. They decided on welded steel painted to look like cement. That way it won't get crushed if we get another big storm. They called in Betty Marvel, the Pastor's wife to paint the bluebird itself and when she finished darn if it didn't look like a pigeon. In any case it will fool the tourists and most of the local people.
On the round part of the base is the inscription "The Bird that Saved Pigeon Falls" and on eight square plates on the bottom the entire Pigeon Story is inscribed. Boy that was one of the hardest jobs. Now all that remains is to put all the parts together. I guess they'll do that tomorrow. Other than the Pigeon and the work out on the trestle the town has been fairly
quiet. The biggest thing is still trying to figure out what star with last initial M might lead the Pigeon Day parade. People are really working on Eino to give more information since he's the one who leaked the M. Well I'll keep you informed.
.......Very good last night. I started the day working in the garage. Betty joined me and she painted our bluebird gray, she did a good job, too. Then we decided that the piece of iron pipe we had tried to use to anchor the fountain would make a good base. So first we cleaned off the rust and then Betty painted it with rust proof paint. A coat of gray paint went over that,
Betty went to the LCW picnic and then to the Dr.'s Office. I came in and worked on creating the transfers for the statue, which includes the entire Pigeon Falls Pigeon story which I'll have to tell you sometime. When Betty came back from the Dr.'s we began mountain building again and used up all the rocks Dawn brought us and one can of foam. The mountain and the river system is looking good. We we'll send up a picture when its done. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Wednesday July 13

Saying for the day:If you wish to live wisely, ignore sayings including this one.
......The big wedding last Saturday set people to thinking, not always a good thing, about the other Jupola brother, Veikko Jupola. Veikko was the oldest of the brothers and when he turned eighteen he got on the train and was never heard from again. Some said he joined the army, some said he went to California, some said he got rich in New York, and some even said he changed his name and became an actor. But nobody really knows what the true story is. But, as you well know, that doesn't stop people in small towns like Pigeon Falls from telling and retelling the stories . Angela South, our resident interned expert, went on the internet to Peoplesearch.com and found four Veikko Jupolas. But she didn't want to pay the $9.98 fee per person to get more information. So what she found out is one was in California, one was in new York, one was in Chicago, and one was in Florida. That's one for each story, not bad. After all these years its doubtful that we will ever find out what happened to him. Angela asked Eino if he wanted the information enough to pay for it. Eino said he didn't even want it for free . He has no use for the older brother who " hasn't even bothered to contact them in all these years. Where was he when dad was dying." It would, of course, have meant a lot to Eino's dad to hear from Veikko in those last days like in the story of the prodigal son. But , of course, it never happened . When it comes to Veikko Eino is pretty bitter. Well I'll keep you informed.
........ Had a very good night last night. Decided to get a home inventory program from sharware so we could keep track of the things we are putting away for safe keeping. Found one and am now doing an inventory of the office drawers. Worked for an hour in the garage putting all the wood in one place and winding up wire. Betty went to Tops. In the afternoon it was back to the inventory and making maps for our trip at the end of the month. Betty then set about making something for the LCW picnic tomorrow which she can't go to because she has a Dr.'s appointment. We really have to get back to working on the railroad but its been so hot. We were going to put rocks tonight but it rained. I installed a new bible program that has three bible versions and a search function. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Tuesday July 12

Saying for the day:Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation leans on the doorbell.
.....It was a beautiful day in Pigeon Falls and most of the residents were off to their camps at some lake or another. Poor Eino, however, is still stuck working on the pigeon statue. He was crying about it on the phone to his old friend Peter Linna (Peter grew up with the Jupola boys when his father was Pastor of Last Lutheran Church) .Lori came on the extension and offered to send the gray paint . She had a lot of extra gray paint left over from her art work. She was going to paint a picture called gray on a fifty foot canvas but couldn't find a studio big enough for the work so she has all this paint left. Besides she still felt a little guilty about the wedding pictures or lack of them. So Eino said to send the paint and they could put off painting the bluebird until it comes. Then Eino went off to Toivo's camp to do a little fishing. The railroad is working full time at fixing the trestle at Red Roof Cafe and hope to have all the trains back on schedule by Thursday or Friday or maybe next Monday. The roads are so bad that Pigeon Falls is really railroad dependant and this kind of problem really causes trouble for the town. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
....Had a good night last night with long periods of sleep. If it wasn't for a week bladder I would have slept right through the night. In the morning Betty and I worked in the garage . we cleaned and put in new storage for the trains. After lunch we continued in the garage, Betty put two coats of varnish on the new trestle. We tested all of the engines that were in the garage that hadn't been run yet and they all worked except the old Bachmann circus train. I guess we need to retire it. Before we quit for the day we took pictures of the new trestle. Betty went out again later and watered all the plants because today was a scorcher. I ordered a faster DSL from SBC for less than I am paying now. I talked to my sister Dawn and told her the tickets came for Greater America, so that is taken care of.. I also upgraded our web page by replacing the storm pictures with trestle pictures. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Sunday July 10

Saying for the Day:If you're headed in the wrong direction, God allows U-turns
.....Well its the day after the big wedding and Pigeon Falls is recovering from all the excitement. Last Lutheran Church has fewer people then usual for Sunday morning since Lutherans tend to believe that going to church more than once a week is unnecessary and weddings count, besides a good number are at home sleeping off the results of the big reception that lasted until 2:00 in the morning. There was some confusion, yesterday over the wedding pictures, Eino arranged to get a big name photographer from Green Bay ( Lori Linna ) to come and take the wedding pictures. Then the trestle over by the Red Roof Restaurant was found to be a bit shaky so the railroad rerouted its passenger train causing a huge mix up in schedules ( as bad as airlines ). Lori arrived in Pigeon Falls and hour late and the wedding had already started. Worse there are no taxis in town and all the people were at the wedding. She was left sitting on the Masonic building steps waiting for the reception. She did take reception pictures but pictures of a soaked to the skin bride and groom are not exactly the stuff memories are made of. She did get a picture of Grandma Morris's wedding cake with the plastic bride and groom leaning slightly to the right. So the only pictures at the wedding itself were taken by Tommy, the undertaker's kid, with a nd old Brownie Box camera using 620 Kodak color film. Now we have to wait until the pictures come back to see how they came out. Esteher Kivi said she's put the film in the mail first thing tomorrow morning. One last bit of picture information, the bride's uncle Hugo Jupola from Florida arrived on the same train as Lori but he went down to the Usd Car lot and took one of the cars, which was alright because he is the brother of the owners and a silent partner in the business as Well. He got to the church just as they were coming out and took one picture with one of those new fangled digital cameras. I understand it turned out fine. Well I'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
......Had a good night at the motel except for the results of the lasix which I took in the evening instead of in the morning. In the morning spent some time in the hot tub (6:00 to 6:30) and then we tried to get ready for church but by the time I took the breathing treatment, my pills, and had breakfast. we only had a half an hour to load the car and get to the church so we gave up. After loading the car we went to Menard's to get Betty some goggles and ended up buying, a nail gun, two sawhorses, nails, stain, wood, door mat, and the goggles. Then we went to the Barnes and Noble bookstore where we bought $75 worth of books. After that we went to a shop that has all kinds of little houses and ornaments. We bought a Gazebo with a band, a pretzel wagon, and a woodpile. The entire family then met for lunch at the Old Country Buffet (the rest of the family went to church). Then off to Peter's and canasta. We left for home about 5:30. well I really need a breathing treatment.

Bree at her birthday party Posted by Picasa

Saturday July 9(Corrected)

Saying for the day:Older people shouldn't eat health food, they need all the preservatives they can get.Robert Orben
.....It was the day of the big wedding in Pigeon Falls, and the parking lot at Last Lutheran Church couldn’t of held another car. The church was decorated with hand picked cowslips, a beautiful yellow flower, and some roses from Angela South’s garden. The bride had a beautiful white dress which the ring bearer and flower girl kept stepping on. The groom’s suit looked a bit small but he borrowed it from his brother, no rental place in Pigeon Falls. The bridesmaids wore cute red and yellow dresses made for them by the three sewing Esthers from Last Lutheran. Pastor Marvel’s sermon was extra long and everyone thought he was taking advantage of the fact that the church was full. During the service the sun was shining but as the service ended it started to lightly rain. Right after the bride and groom got into the limo it turned into a downpour. The Limo hit that big pothole a mile out of town and got stuck in the mud. The poor bride and groom had to change cars and by the time they reached the Masonic building they were soaked to the core. But the reception went well anyway. The band was even better than expected and everyone cried when they sang “Chicken soup marriage.” The hit of the reception though was an old time song “ Rain Drops Keep Falling on My Head”. By the time the reception was over they had the limo out of the mud and the rain had stopped. The Bride and Groom left by train on their honeymoon . Well I’ll keep you informed as to what’s happening in Pigeon Falls.
......Very good night. Got up fifteen minutes early because we are going to Green Bay to celebrate Bree's birthday. We finally got everything packed and decided to eat breakfast at the Ranch (Now called Great Northern Buffet ).It was a good plan but the restaurant didn't open until 10:00 so we ate at the Ranger City Restaurant along the road. It was not a bad breakfast. Coming to Green Bay we felt sad that our usual restaurant was gone, forever. We went to Best Buy, an office supply place, and Toys are Us, on our way to the motel. Then we checked in to the Hampton Inn with our Hilton Card. We propped the bed so I could sleep, I can't sleep laying flat because the lungs won't work. we set up my breathing machines and the oxygen tank. Then we went shopping on our way to Peter's. I can't remember the names of the places Betty wanted to go but we did stop at Walgreen's to buy something we forgot at home. Then it was off to Peter's and a wonderful meal ( grilled chicken, hot dogs and bratwurst) plus getting to see our five grandchildren, as well as Peter, Lori, Pat, and Pennie. The fireworks afterward were fabulous. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Our First Trestle -not finished. Posted by Picasa

Friday July 8

Saying for the day:Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you.Carl Jung
.......Well everyone is trying to think of a star whose last name starts with an M. Grandma Moris said it must be either Walter Matthau or Dean Martin. We tried to tell her they were both dead but she said she saw them on television just this last week. Angela South, our Mayor, said that she went on the Internet and there were over 700 movie stars whose last name started with an M. Tommy, the undertakers son, said he hoped it was Takehiro Murata. Nobody wanted to admit they had never heard of him, but it seemed only Tommy had any information. Angela went back to the internet and discovered that he was the star of Godzilla 2000. That's one of those movies that comes on television after midnight. Tommy must be sneaking down to watch television after his parents go to bed. Name the star fever has gotten so bad that even tourists up at the Red Roof Cafe were trying to guess who it could be. Bonnie, she runs the Red Roof, told them they would have to come back in August to find out who was right. In other news Ken Johnson is still waiting to find out if the DNR is going to prosecute him for wolf killing. In the meantime they sent him a fifteen page questioner . It included questions like "Did the wolf snarl and show his teeth?". Or "on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is non and ten is sure death, rate the danger from this wolf at the time you killed him." Ken says he has finished the first five pages.
Well I'll keep you informed of what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
......Good night last night but woke up with bad heartburn. In the morning I worked on bent's for the trestle and ran the train . Tried the wireless video camera and it worked with the television set but not with my computer interface. Betty went to the eye doctor because yesterday when we were sawing wood for the trestle, a speck of wood hit her in the eye. She made me wear a mask and safety goggles. She came back at noon and said the Dr. gave her some antibiotics to prevent infection and took out the speck. In the afternoon she washed all the kitchen windows and rehung the curtains. I finished the bents for the trestle. Then Betty came out and together we built our first trestle. It still needs top planking and staining but we think it looks nice. I came in and got the wireless camera to work with my computer but then the computer went down. It was one of those things where I had to reset the system to yesterday to get it working again. I'm going to take the time off the web cam because nothing ever goes right. We are getting ready to go to peter's tomorrow and I will do a quick blog in the morning before we leave. Well I really need a breathing treatment.

Pigeon Falls Recap

Pigeon Falls-The Little Town the State and Time forgot, where all the men hunt deer and the women let them..
For those of you who may have missed some of the Pigeon Falls information here is a recap. The recent storm really hit Pigeon Falls hard. The Town Hall, local tavern, post office, Masonic building, and Lutheran parsonage were all blown over. Have to get the repair crew out tomorrow and see what we can do. It was a devastating storm. Peter Linna from Green Bay wondered if we need to start some kind of relief effort for the town and said the buildings will have to be built better. The citizens of Pigeon Falls appreciate his efforts but are very independent and want no help. Rain hampered town clean up in the morning but by the afternoon we got the town back in order. Put in the new school (city engineer said it wouldn't handle a storm like the old school which was untouched by the wind) and put the cemetery back. Only lost one citizen of Pigeon Falls. It was a little old lady that a house fell on. She was wearing funny ruby slippers and I swear a bunch of little people were dancing around and singing.
.....A few last words about the storm at Pigeon Falls-When we finally got the house off the old lady some water fell on her from the roof and she burned up. As she was disappearing she said two things ."Forget the yellow brick road" and "Don't give my shoes to Dorothy ".The shoes by the way are at the parsonage of Last Lutheran Church, where the Rev.Alowishus Marvel, a real wizard of a guy is pastor .
......Well with the big storm behind them the good citizens of Pigeon Falls are getting ready for their annual Pigeon Days. The big sign that hangs across the street needs to be mended and hung, a parade planned, and somebody has to find some pigeons. It would not be pigeon day without pigeons. They seem to be in scarce supply this year. Some say its because Tommy, the undertakers kid got that new bb gun but to be fair it could just be another result of the big wind. After all the pigeons always sat on the Town Hall roof and it got toppled in the storm.
.....Well the rumor that the Pigeon Days committee is getting a top rated star for the Pigeon Days parade still persists. Non of the committee has talked thus far. You know the committee, its been the same five people for ever, Eino Jupal from Eino and Toivo's Sorta Usd Cars, Esther Kivi from the Kivi and Maki variety store, Roger Stir from the All Hands Insurance Office, Tom Ellingsen the undertaker, and Mrs. Victoria Worsworth our school Superintendent. They absolutely refuse to either deny or confirm the rumor. But its a small town and you can't keep a secret forever. The ladies from the Lutheran Church, that make quilts to send to poor foreign countries, are making the repairs to the Pigeon Day's Banner. This is essential because there isn't enough money in the fund to pay for a new one, times are pretty tight in Pigeon Falls. There isn't even enough money to pay the usual prizes for the best whatever in the parade so the committee had to cut every prize in half. Of course non of the good citizens of Pigeon Falls cares about prize money, its the honor of winning that's important
…..Well its the fourth of July in Pigeon Falls and aside from the Methodist pasty sale not much is happening. Its not that the good citizens aren't patriotic, indeed they are, but that Pigeon Days takes up so much energy there is non left for other special events. Of course there are those fireworks that Eino (from Eino and Toivo's Sorta Usd Cars) bought. He took the train to the place where the Indians sell illegal fireworks legally and brought back all that he could carry. So firecrackers are going off everywhere and bottle rockets. The local constable pretends he doesn't see whets going on. The sheriff only comes to Pigeon Falls when its near election time. He knows our good citizens vote. But then there isn't much crime in Pigeon Falls .In fact the last big criminal act was when Tommy, the undertakers son, took Ester Kivi's car and drove it out to the cemetery. Since he was only ten Esther said to just forget it. Which is just as well since we would have to bring a judge in from the county seat. Tommy did get grounded for a week which made a lot of birds and squirrels happy. Speaking of the Methodist pasty sale it is a tradition started by the Odd Fellows when they had a lodge in Pigeon Falls ( most of them were Methodists) . They brought the pasty receipts all the way from Cornwall. That's in England. They make these cute little one hand pasties that are just perfect for picnics.
The big news in Pigeon Falls today is the upcoming wedding of Nancy Jupola , daughter of Eino Jupola, to Henry Johnson, head mechanic for the M&LC railroad (Moneypit & Lost Cash). Toivo had a limousine brought in by train for the occasion. Of course they don't really need a limo since its only two miles from the church to the Masonic Hall where the reception will be held. Uncle Toivo is some high order Mason and insisted it be held there and then of course Nancy was once a Job's Daughter's Queen. The reception will be catered by Grandma Moris (It was her or the cute little Methodist pasties) who has been catering weddings in Pigeon Falls forever. Everyone knows there will be ham and buns, some kind of beef, sticky spaghetti, Jell-O salads, and some of those wonderful little cakes that only grandma Moris makes. She used to have chicken as well but she says she is too old to chase them down, kill them, and go through all the trouble of removing the feathers. Music will be provided by the "Out of Harmony Six" a wonderful little group that Toivo is bringing in by train. I am sure you have heard of them. They had that big hit song " Chicken Soup Marriage" . The lyrics go something like : " Chicken soup marriage, chicken soup marriage, you'll never get sick if you have a chicken soup marriage."

Thursday July 7

Saying for the day:Some of the world's greatest feats were accomplished by people not smart enough to know they were impossible.Doug Larson
......Well there was a lot of excitement in Pigeon Falls yesterday. Grandma Moris and her grand daughter, you know the one that always wears the cute little red riding hood, were having tea and lemonade in the back yard when suddenly a big wolf appeared. Why those ladies screamed so loud you could here them in town. Ken Johnson from the "We Cut Um" lumber company was driving by when he heard the screaming. He grabbed his axe and got that wolf right between the eyes with one throw. That, of course, was a big mistake. Now the DNR is threatening to prosecute him for killing a protected animal. He had to learn the hard way that rescuing old ladies and their grand daughter from the big bad wolf only makes you a hero in fairy tales. There is talk in town, however, of taking up a collection to pay his fine, if the DNR does prosecute. Grandma Moris even offered to serve his jail time, if it comes to that. Grandma insists that she will be able to cater the wedding on Saturday. Speaking of that wedding Eino Jupola got so involved in the wedding plans that he let slip that the initial of the last name of the star they are trying to get . It is M. Well I'll keep you informed on what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
.......Very restless night last night. I think I have to watch what I eat before I go to bed. In the morning we went downstairs and cut pieces for the trestle we have now committed ourselves to making. Then Dawn and Paul came with rocks and took us out to lunch at Fob's. They are bringing more rocks on Sunday. Betty went to the hair dresser and I built three bents for the trestle. For a four foot trestle we have decided to use nine bents. After Betty returned we went back to building a mountain. I assumed we had enough rocks for two days work but Betty has gotten so good that she finished all the rocks in an hour an one half. Betty went then to water the plants and take some pictures while I came in and worked on my computer. There was an E-mail letter from Chris wondering about our web cam and our software . I sent her an e-mail letter telling her I needed some more time to evaluate what the camera can do. What I really need is a wireless camera that can feed directly into the computer. What I have is what I could afford. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Saying for the day: Some people see things that are and ask, Why? Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not? Some people have to go to work and don't have time for all that:George Carlin
The lyrics go something like : " Chicken soup marriage, chicken soup marriage, you'll never get sick if you have a chicken soup marriage." Well Ill keep you informed as to what' happening in Pigeon Falls.
.....A good night last night, didn't wake up till 6:02. Our new Hilton Card was delivered today so Betty has a credit card again. They spelled her name right this time. I went to work on a sample bent for a trestle and Betty gave it her Ok before she went to Tops. The Tops group ate at a new restaurant that opened just beyond Memory Lane. UPS brought my new power pack for the train and I worked at getting it ready to install. When Betty came home we began revising the train control area. We put in new cabinets and the new transformer. There are no wires hanging in the front and it looks good. We won't know until tomorrow if it works. Dawn called and is bringing some more rocks in the morning. we really need them. We took a quick trip to Slivensky's to get electrical tape, boards, and nails. Betty painted the board were going to try under the switch track. I called and made a reservation for Saturday at the Hampton Inn in Green Bay , and made a reservation for Patrick and boys, at Carol Stream, for the end of the month trip.Well I need a breathing treatment.

Tuesday July5

Saying for the day:As a child of God, prayer is kind of like calling home everyday.
.....Well the rumor that the Pigeon Days committee is getting a top rated star for the Pigeon Days parade still persists Non of the committee has talked thus far. Of course non of the good citizens of Pigeon Falls cares about prize money, its the honor of winning that's important. Well I'll keep you informed of what's going on in Pigeon Falls.
.....Had a good night last night. This morning we mad calls to get some help after the truck called and said our bathtub would be here at 10:00 in the morning. Well we got old faithful Dick Hendrickson and Buddy West so the bathtub now sits in the hallway instead of out on the lawn.
Then I went downstairs and cut some boards to use to make a trestle when we get the time. Betty went and got the mail which included the Garden Railroad Magazine and a new hand cart for hauling things. I drool over the adds and she reads the articles.
Then betty and I worked on getting the river to stop leaking, not an easy job .After lunch we put the handcart together and then went back to building the mountain with the rocks Dawn and Paul brought. We used our new cart to haul them. Betty them locked them in place with foam. Its coming but not there yet. Christine sent an E-mail saying she might meet us at the National Railroad Show. She also wanted me to be sure to tell Peter and Pat there was a water park now connected to Greater America. I called Peter to ask about Bree's birthday only to find they had posted it to the blog. So we may go there Saturday. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Monday July 4

Saying for the day:No matter how busy you are, you must take time to make the other person feel important.Mary Kay Ash
Well its the fourth of July in Pigeon Falls and aside from the Methodist pasty sale not much is happening. Well we'll keep you informed as to what's happening in Pigeon Falls.
...Bad night last night, the big mask gave me a lot of trouble so I did not sleep well. This morning Betty cleaned house while I worked on the wireless video camera. Now that we have web cam capability I want something other that Betty or I at the computer to send. we would like the train moving down the track. I got the camera working with the television in the kitchen, now I have to get it to feed into the computer. That will be a much harder job. After I finished with the camera I went out and ran the Aristocraft train. I sent it around three times with no trouble then Dawn and Paul arrived and it stalled over on the end. They brought much needed rocks.
For lunch we went to Kevin's and met Mary's family. Kevin grilled and there was plenty of food.
On the way home we stopped at Home Depot and bought some wood to build a sample trestle. If it works out we will buy some more. Coming home we discovered that Pennie had sent us two fourth of July E-mail cards and there was an E-mail letter from Christine. I scanned in the picture of Dawn's whole family that I got at Kevin's. I"ll try to get it on the web page tomorrow.
Well I really need a breathing treatment.

Sunday July 3

Saying for the day:It's all right to sit on your pity pot every now and again.
Just be sure to flush when you are done.
Fairly good night but the mask hurt my nose so it will be the big mask tonight.
. Well with the big storm behind them the good citizens of Pigeon Falls are getting ready for their annual Pigeon Days. There is a rumor in town that the planing committee has invited a big star to lead the parade on Pigeon Day. Well we'll keep you informed as things go on in Pigeon Falls.
. In the morning Betty put some trestles in to elevate the track on the far end where the train kept losing its cars. After some adjustments this seemed to work pretty well and we got two complete round trips done before the next disconnect. Betty thinks the logging car is too unstable and so I worked on fixing that in the afternoon. We went downstairs and cut the plywood for an extension off the end of the upper tunnel. I brought up a piece of board to try under a really troublesome switch track. Betty cleaned house while I tided up in the garage. Then we went looking for our little video camera and receiver. We found it but it took a lot of looking. We really need to get organized. Dawn called and invited us to Kevin's for the 4th of July , she is also bringing some more rocks. I called Peter and found out that Bree was too tall for a child's ticket and we assume that Alex is also too tall. We are trying to get a hold of Pat to find out how tall Elijah is. Well I need a breathing treatment.

Saturday July2

Saying for the day:He who asks a question may be a fool for five minutes, but he who never asks a question remains a fool forever.Tom Connelly
Just after my breathing treatment the store called and they found Betty's purse. Well one good came of it we canceled two cards that we had intended to cancel in any case. Had a good night last night. A few last words about the storm at Pigeon Falls-When we finally got the house off the old lady some water fell on her from the roof and she burned up. As she was disappearing she said two things ."Forget the yellow brick road" and "Don't give my shoes to Dorothy ".The shoes by the way are at the parsonage of Last Lutheran Church, where the Rev.Alowishus Marvel, a real wizard of a guy is pastor .In the morning we worked on a platform to go next to the restaurant. Then we ran some trains. I decided to start with the logging train which is a Bachmann and we had a lot of trouble. The engine works well but the cars keep getting disconnected. We have to keep fixing the little things that the engine pays no attention too in order to keep the train together. Every time I thought we had it fixed it would disconnect at some other place. After lunch we put the new station in its place up by the restaurant and ran the train a few more times. Then we came inside. Without rock there is not much we can do. Dawn's next load won't be here until sometime next week. Betty did some laundry and I worked at cleaning up my office . Then we went to Saturday night service. There was a baptism and the pastor couldn't find the battery pack for the church camera so I sent Betty home for ours. It was a very nice service, and it felt good to be back in church. When we came home I uploaded the pictures first to the church website and then to the church office. It felt like old times. Well I need a breathing treatment.

The new restaurant Posted by Picasa

Friday July1

Saying for the day: For every failure, there's an alternative course of action. You just have to find it. When you come to a roadblock, take a detour.Mary Kay Ash
Betty got the door on the cabinet last night during my breathing treatment-now only one left to build. Had a cup of tea before I went to bed and slept very well last night. This morning I moved the pictures of the storm damage to Pigeon Falls to our web page at - www.familylinna.com- It was devastating storm. Peter wondered if we need to start some kind of relief effort for the town and said the buildings will have to be built better. The citizens of Pigeon Falls appreciate his efforts but are very independent and want no help. Rain hampered town clean up in the morning so we worked on final touches to the restaurant and stairs. We began kitbashing a new station. It turned out quiet nice. In the afternoon we got the town back in order. Then we put out the restaurant and the stairs. Built up the mountain until we were out of rock. Then we went grocery shopping. Here Betty 's purse disappeared and we don't know if it is lost or stolen but we had to call all the credit card companies and invalidate our cards. What a day. Well its time for a breathing treatment.
