Strange but not so Strange

Today's Link
Sometimes Stupid... Always Crazy

Saying for the Day

Literature is mostly about having sex and not much about having children; life is the other way around. ~David Lodge, The British Museum Is Falling Down, 1965

Picture of the Day
Alex the pie maker and one of his pies

We live in a strange age where some governments place more value on death than on life. As I searched the internet I came across the following:
“Two of Oregon's unique public health markers clashed dramatically for resident Barbara Wagner this summer when she was informed that the universal medical care available to everyone in the state (but with certain service restrictions) would not pay for her expensive lung cancer drug (because her five-year survival likelihood was poor), but was told, at the same time, that the state would pay for any necessary drugs under its Death With Dignity Law (i.e., suicide). [ABC News, 8-6-08] “
The state decided she wasn’t worth trying to keep alive but being generous was willing to pay to help her die “ with dignity”. The fact that she doesn’t want to die with or without dignity is not considered in the state’s decision. The fact that she might be in the twenty percent that survive because of the expensive drug is not important. The state looks at the odds and the odds are against her.
This is the world we are building, one law at a time.
News from Pigeon Falls
The little town in my basement where the trains still run, dragons fly, and life is back to normal
The shadow is no longer unnoticed as it now covers half of Bob Maki’s field, the one behind the cow barn. If it continues to grow it will reach the cow barn by tonight. It is also expanding sideways and will if it continues reach the railroad track by tonight.
Bob Maki , who is now aware of the shadow, has been trying to examine it. So far he has learned that beneath the shadow it is pitch black. His brightest spotlight won’t penetrate the darkness. He thinks that once something goes in it never comes out. His dog Rex chased a rabbit into the shadow and he has called and called but Rex hasn’t come out. In addition there are animal tracks going in but none coming out. It seems to just swallow things up.
This morning Bob called Eino and Eino came and had a look. Eino made some calculations and figured it would take the shadow about two weeks to reach the main street. He decided to call his friend in Homeland Security and get him to send somebody to help them. There must be some government agency that has some expert that can do something.
Word of the shadow on Bob Maki’s farm has spread all over Pigeon Falls. Tommy UK feels guilty because he has been thinking more about Tammy and hasn’t put much effort into the driblet. Now he feels that has to change or there will be no Pigeon Falls and no future for him and Tammy. He really needs to talk to Herman.

Wrap Up
A little better day but a rough night. My oxygen moved up a little and I used less than a small tank today.I worked on Saturday's and Sunday's blog since my grand sons will be sleeping in the computer room and I won't have much of a chance at the computer. Betty went shopping in the morning. I took a nap in the afternoon.I visited my first and fifth tiers of links. Now I need a breathing treatment.

I'm scared. Of laws and shadows. Thanks Pastor... now I'm sinning again. I suggest Pigeon Falls UNITE and form a prayer circle! We can PRAY that shadow away!

I wonder if the Oregon law regarding medication would be so stringently applied if it was some major politician's spouse that needed the cancer drugs. Sad commentary.

It is indeed disturbing that health authorities should make such considerations. As you say, for some authorities, life does not have much value. In particular, when it is costly. Probably some obscure accountant type, calculating cost/benefit ratios, is behind such considerations.

Dr. John -- it seems the governments are choosing to bow to mammon. You know of course that WE are the governments and only WE can stop this. The question is, HOW?

I am glad somebody has finally noticed the shadow! I am sorry Tommy feels guilty, but I am so glad he's going to look into things. HE hasn't got much time before Pigeon Falls is history!

I WAS APPALLED WHEN I SAW THAT OREGON HAD APPROVED THE METHOD OF ASSISTED SUICIDE; this is just so scary that people will be maneuvered into going that way by not paying for medicines that they need to stay alive!

It looks like Alex did a great job on that pie! I bet it tasted good too.

It's sad that
die with dignity' takes priority over 'life with hope.'
Our society needs to get it's diaper changed.

Your blog posts are increasingly deep and profound, Dr. John. Your mind is evolving at an astonishing pace. I'm sorry to hear you haven't felt well, but believe the extra oxygen you're consuming is going right to your head.

In the best possible way.

I can't wait to see what segment of the human condition you'll tackle next!

As for dreams -- I often dream of S.W.A.T. teams, police detectives, and private investigators. When I sleep tonight, I'll try to send them up to work on your 'Case of the Missing Green Fords'. My guys are great -- they'll get to the bottom of this!

I don't understand how on the one hand, we want to stop abortion and yet can't do everything in our power to save the lives that have already been around and made a difference...
