Happy Fourth

Saying for the Day: You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism. ~Erma Bombeck

America the Beautiful - 1913

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for pilgrim feet
Whose stern, impassioned stress
A thoroughfare for freedom beat
Across the wilderness!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw,
Confirm thy soul in self-control,
Thy liberty in law!

O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife.
Who more than self the country loved
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divine!

O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

#### News from Pigeon Falls-The little town in my basement where the trains still run, dragons fly, and life is back to normal . It is the fourth of July in Pigeon Falls and there will be a big parade this morning. The Blue Notes from Ishpeming will play and people will remember the days when there would be six or seven bugle corps in the parade with a big contest afterward. People let the corps members stay in their homes and some even stayed at Last Lutheran. Those were special days, gone forever. So today the Blue Notes and the Consolidated High School Band will march alone. But they will march and people will remember.
In the afternoon there will be an old fashioned picnic out at the Lake of the Loon’s . The Liar’s Club and the Pigeonelle Lodge will provide free ice cream cones. Last Lutheran ladies will provide free coffee and lemonade. The community will celebrate the wonder that is America. Mayor Trumble will make her annual God Bless America speech and the adults will listen politely. The kids will scream and run and fight and swim and ignore the adults as much as possible.
Perhaps, the dragons, the White Rabbit, or the whale will show up. Though they are not part of the tradition.
Tommy UK has Fred’s scuba gear ready in case the whale shows up. He is determined to solve this mystery. Tammy has been trying to talk him out of what she considers a crazy idea. But she hopes the White Rabbit will show up so she can prove it’s a hoax.
But for the most part it will be a day to celebrate the dream, the vision which is America. A day to celebrate liberty and freedom. A day to demonstrate freedom by firing a bottle rocket or two. A day for police to remember, smile, and not see the bombs bursting in air.
This is the fourth of July in Pigeon Falls and they will celebrate.

Today's Link-Here in the Hills- It's the Fourth
This is the kind of holiday I enjoy. I started in the morning and made some picture pages for Betty to take to her class reunion. Then Pennie and I went to the fireworks store where we bought some things for the kids. We got tanks that when you light them take off down the driveway, stop and shoot sparks out of the canon. We also got turtles that did pretty much the same thing. We got smoke bombs that gave off different colored smoke. We got poppers that you pull and out comes confetti. We got pop pops, things that are like caps without a cap pistol. In the afternoon the kids loved them. Then we went to Wal Mart and picked up Pennie's new grill. In the afternoon Peter and family came. We set off all the things with and for the children. Then Peter grilled with the new grill. We had steak, chicken, bratwurst, hot dogs , and corn. Betty had put together a great fruit salad bowl. I love the fourth. Tonight we will set off fountains only no rockets. We will be legal. Then Betty will leave with Peter and family. Tomorrow Peter will drive her to her class reunion and I will be home alone. Well Pennie will be next door but the day after a holiday is a day lots of people try to commit suicide and she is on call. So I expect she will be spending a lot of time at the hospital. Now I need a breathing treatment.

As a member of the Tommy club, I would think that Tammy would know that Tommy UK is one smart kid and usually knows what he is doing.

Ahhhh! Great quote! That's exactly what I'm doing today! I haven't even had time to put together a post today! I've blown up about 3 dozen balloons though... NOT helium! I've made potato salad & pasta salad, coleslaw and iced tea. The grill is clean and ready to cook! Luz spent the night with me last night - so all has been done with LOTS of assistance - from both her & Mom!!! And now I sat down to rest for a few minutes before the rest of the family arrives. Have a blessed 4th Dr. John! You AND Pigeon Falls!

Happy 4th to you, too. Loved the EB quote. She was one of my mom's favorites--she could really relate to her motherly humor.

Love Erma. Her work was the best. We are doing the traditional, hosting a 4th of July picnic, potato salad, hot dogs, chips, games, the works. We have a great view of the fireworks from the deck. God Bless America!
