No Good Deed

Saying for the Day- We often repent the good we have done as well as the ill. ~William Hazlitt, Characteristics, 1823

It is said that no good deed goes unpunished. There may be some truth to that in a global sense.
Some years ago we discovered the ozone layer that protects from the harmful rays of the sun was being depleted. We further discovered that the use of chlorofluorocarbons was causing the problem. A global ban on their use went into effect and today very slowly the ozone is being restored. We did a good deed for us and the planet.
The problem is the Antarctic ozone hole has kept that continents interior cold even as the rest of the world warmed ( for whatever reason). Now, however as the hole closes the warming of Antarctica has begun. If the hole closes all the way the ozone would absorb enough ultraviolet light to warm up as much as nine degrees Celsius. This would break down the circulation patterns that trap cold air over Antarctica making the continent heat up. This will be far greater than the increase projected from C02 gases . It will also result in the thawing of the permafrost which will release vast amounts of methane gas into the air. According to some scientists methane is a worse green house gas than CO2. Global Warming will accelerate.
So in our great wisdom we cured one problem but we could not see that the cure would cause problems of its own.
No good deed goes unpunished.

#### News from Pigeon Falls-The little town in my basement where the trains still run, dragons fly, and life is back to normal . Poor Tommy UK , on the one hand he is trying to solve the mystery of the whale and on the other he is trying to defend the White Rabbit. The whale is problem enough. First there is the question of how a salt water creature can turn up in a fresh water lake. Then there is the fact that it keeps disappearing. And finally Tommy UK is convinced that this whale is the same whale that is showing up in a lake in Canada but he can’t prove it. So he has gone back to studying the driblet and looking for a clue there. He has decided that the man in the red hat is the RCMP sergeant which is one of the reasons he is sure this whale and the one in Canada are the same. But right at the end of the driblet is a laughing man in black. Tommy UK thinks if he could identify that man he might solve the mystery.
On the other front the Tommy Club is becoming more and more convinced the White Rabbit is a hoax and nothing that Tommy UK says can change their mind. Because the White Rabbit has disappeared they can’t prove it. So they are as frustrated by the rabbit as Tommy UK is by the whale.
Mrs. Trumble, in her capacity as Mayor has asked Tommy UK and Tammy to meet with her this evening to discuss the White Rabbit. As one who has chased the rabbit and even shot the rabbit once she says she has information and some things they should see.
Bonnie McGregor’s delivery time is drawing closer. Because she is carrying twins and perhaps because of the driblet Old Doc Simpson wants her to go and stay with her cousin in Iron Mountain just down from the hospital. So far she has refused.
Today is the day of the big House funeral. It will be a really large funeral and Last Lutheran will be full. Herman House, her father, was one of the most powerful men in Pigeon Falls. The rich and the powerful always have lots of people at their funerals.
Pastor Joan will ride with Tommy UK’s father out to the old cemetery for the committal.

My oxygen was better than usual today. I printed out all of my April blogs for my sister Dawn who likes to read them. At lunch time a new book came from my book club and I started reading that. Then I did some visiting of my links. Now I need a breathing treatment.

Thanks for making Karen's blog your link for the day.

Why hasnt Tommy gone scuba diving yet to find the whale?

Better yet, why hasnt his eccentric uncle let Tommy UK use his one man submarine to check out the lake? I dont know if his uncle has a one man sub. But if he is eccentric, then no doubt he has something similar. Or could it be that Tommy's uncle really is the man in black? -- tho the man in black could be his undertaker father. Is this the driblet that finally reveals Tommy's heritage?

Oooo OUCH! Too much thinking for one day! My brain is melting! Tommy UK needs to get a GPS on that whale! The man in black is probably Sherman House... the weird brother the family always tried to keep a secret! He probably has a teleporter and is moving the whale around and around ... and LAUGHING as the whole world tries to figure out the mystery! Mayor Trumble scares me. I'm sure she scares the rabbit too... he's probably moved on to the next town. I doubt he'll be back!

you know, all these climate changes make me wonder how little we in fact know about our planet and its cycles... and how much damage we actually do that have influence on the changes...

So, why don't we break out the fluorocarbons again?

Or maybe Tommy can tackle global warming after her sorts out this whale riddle.
